“A Few Good Eggs” – Book Review

In the realm of adoption, parenting, and fertility literature, there are an almost infinite number of books that discuss how to cope with and overcome infertility. This often makes finding a book regarding infertility that fits your particular needs much more difficult to find. Books like, “A Few Good Eggs: Two Chicks Dish on Overcoming the Insanity of Infertility” by Julie Vargo and Maureen Regan, is one of the few that stands out among the hundreds of others.

“A Few Good Eggs” is a guidebook and personal reflection book written by two women who have experienced the grueling process of infertility. This book is written not to be wholly informational or serious. Rather, Vargo and Regan attempt to help those experiencing infertility by giving them straight answers that are laced with humor.

Many of the reviews on the web for “A Few Good Eggs” claim that it is an insulting book that attempts to make the reader laugh at his or her own infertility. However, any book with the subtitle, “Two Chicks Dish on Overcoming in the Insanity of Infertility” is probably not going to carry a completely serious tone. This being said, this book is an easily relatable, straightforward resource that serves as a guide for individuals who are experiencing infertility.

One of the most unique parts of “A Few Good Eggs” is that before the first chapter, foreword, or introduction even begins, there is a board game. Not an actual board game that one could play, but a colorful and cartoonish game board path that depicts the chronological order of having baby, whether it be through adoption, IVF, or surrogacy. This game, entitled “Baby Land” is a wonderful prelude to the book and perfectly describes the topics and tone of the book. You definitely will not find another book like this on the market.
