November 25th Adoption Book of the Day – “Parenting Your Internationally Adopted Child”

The Adoption Book of the Day for today is “Parenting Your Internationally Adopted Child: From Your First Hours Together Through the Teen Years” by Patty Cogen! Thanks Meg Montgomery for this wonderful review!

Patty Cogen, a retired child development specialist and child and family therapist as well a mom of two grown children, one birthed, one adopted has written an engaging book to support and educate parents of adopted children as well as adoption professionals.

Patty Initiated a group for parents and their adopted child(ren), calling it “First Year Home Group”. Through this group she intended to provide education and support similar to what she found easily accessible to her at the birth her first child, but what seemed lacking when she adopted her second child. Subsequently she wrote a book highlighting insights and strategies she uncovered over her years of work with families who were touched by adoption.

The goal is for parents to learn about the development of their children and how to use parenting strategies uniquely designed for children who have been in foster and/or orphanage care.
There are many tools and tips written and thoroughly described in about 400 pages, each chapter highlighting different critical topics such as understanding child behavior, parenting strategies and adoption as your child grows up.

While the book is directed towards families who have added children who have had foster care or orphanage experience, the useful information and strategies contained within the pages can truly apply to any adoptive family.

We think you will agree that Patty’s book, Parenting Your Internationally Adopted Child is a comprehensive and useful resource relevant to many children, not just international adoptees.
