Nancy Verrier derived the idea behind this book from her Master’s Degree thesis, entitled “The Primal Wound: Legacy of the Adopted Child”. She then grew the concept into the great book that exists today!

This book discusses the loss, separation, and abandonment from their birthmothers that adopted children experience in their lives. This book is written to change the perspective individuals have towards adoption. Verrier suggests the idea of a “primal wound” that all adopted children experience and enumerates ways to cope with this feeling of loss and pain in the adoptive family.  Written as an analysis on the psychology of adopted children, this non-fiction book is an amazing read for anyone interested in learning more about the effect of adoption on families.
